In this introductory and playful workshop about the basics of ancient thai massage, we will come in contact with one of the first senses that we develop after birth, the sense of touch. Through touch we are able to express, give and receive support, love, warmth. Using the principles of the Buddhist tradition of practicing loving kindness, conscious breathing and aligned posture we will get in touch with ourselves and others. We will explore the basic postures and movements of this wonderful ancient healing art. By using gentle touch, gravity and movement we will create a playful and relaxing massage sequence. Using our body weight, hands and feet we will explore the positive effects of giving and receiving through acupressure and passive yoga stretches.

About Thai Massage

Traditional Thai Massage has its roots in the Indian systems of Yoga and Ayurveda. It is believed to have been developed by Jivaka Kumar Baccha, the legendary founder of Thai massage. He was a physician to the Sangha, the order of Buddhist monks and nuns, at the time of the Buddha. The Thais call him Doctor Shivago and to this day honour him as “The Father of Medicine”. Around 2000 years ago Thai Massage was brought from India to Thailand along with Buddhism. Since then it has been practiced, developed and handed down through the generations. It was never seen as just massage but as a spiritual practice, and until fairly recently mostly practiced in wats, the Thai Buddhist temples. Also known by the names Nuad Boran, Yoga Therapy or Yoga for the Lazy Man, it is a combination of acupressure, asanas, stretching, palming, thumbing and gentle twisting. This helps in bringing back the balance in the body, deepens the connection between mind, body and spirit, in the giver and receiver.
